Acanthus spinosus

Bear's Breeches

Grown as much for its attractive foliage as for its architecturally bold flower spikes. Pure white, snapdragon-like flowers enclosed by spiny, reddish-purple bracts on tall flower spikes which rise 3'-4' above the foliage. The leaves of spinosus are more deeply-cut and have rigid spines. The arching, glossy green, thistle-like leaves remain attractive throughout the growing season.

Acanthus mollis 'Tasmanian Angel'

Bear's Breeches, Variegated

Wow! Looking for something different? Found in Tasmania and extremely rare, here's an insanely cool, pink-blooming, variegated Bear's Breeches. Grown as much for its attractive foliage as for its architecturally bold 5-foot pink and cream flower spikes. The striking leaves have white margins and mottling. A tough plant for difficult shady areas and a fascinating subject for a large pot. Matures to a 3' x 3' clump. Dies to the ground in winter.
