Dryopteris championii Champion's Wood Fern |
Another Asian fern that is a favorite fern of Dr. John Mickel, as it is a strong grower that remains evergreen and attractive even in winter with its dark green, glossy heavy textured fronds throughout the year. Nearly all Dryopteris species that are evergreen may be weighted down with fallen leaves and snow, but this species will remain erect and perky all winter. New fronds are a gorgeous apple green and change to their typical dark green as they mature.

Dryopteris pseudo-filix-mas Mexican Male Fern |
This is a great garden fern, a rare wood fern found in tropical Mexico at 8000-foot elevation near Oaxaca by Dr. John Mickel. Even though found in the tropics it has proven quite cold hardy in zone 5, apparently because it was growing at such a high elevation. It forms a large crown, which can become five foot across and four foot tall. Unlike many other Dryopteris, it continues to produce new fronds throughout the growing season until frost. Evergreen.
