Echinacea 'Hot Papaya' Coneflower |

This sizzling hot new variety blooms non-stop from mid through late summer with highly fragrant, 3'' spicy red-orange flowers bloom with a papaya orange halo in the pom-pom center. The glowing orange flowers have terrific visual impact from quite a distance, especially when planted in groups. When cut the fragrant flowers have a vase-life of nearly two weeks. Though it is a hybrid of two species, ‘Hot Papaya’ strongly exhibits the traits of E. purpurea in foliage and habit. The plant forms a strong, sturdy clump with robust, deep green foliage and thick stems with maroon markings. It grows about three feet tall in the landscape, making it a good choice for the middle of the flower border.

Echinacea ‘Irresistible’ represents one of the most unique ‘pom-pom’ types that have inundating the market in recent years. With its rainbow sherbet-like colors, the three-and-a-half inch flowers emerge a pastel yellow with a copper cone and then transform into double coral pink flowers with a slightly deeper pink pom pom on top! As the flower ages, the centre of the pom-pom gradually lightens to a citron yellow and the ray petals lighten to a peachy pink. Needless to say, its all sounding a wee bit irresistible even to me! In spring the 5'' wide flowers open with bright orange red petals reaching straight out horizontally from a very dark brown center cone and rise a foot or two above the foliage. A native hardy perennial found in eleven states and two Canadian provinces. Super easy to grow in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Best in full sun. An adaptable plant that is tolerant of drought, heat, humidity and poor soil. Divide clumps when they become overcrowded (about every 4 years).
