This delightful low-growing shrub known for its light honey-scented, white bottlebrush-like flowers and brilliant orange-red fall color. A new and outstanding introduction which has greater multi-seasonal interest and is a more vigorous, upright grower, 'Mount Airy' displays both a spectacular blend of autumn colors and a delightful early spring floral display. Likely a cross between two southeastern US natives, F. gardenii and F. major. It is taller than the former but shorter than the latter.

This exciting new introduction has striking, large blue-gray leaves, which develop and intensify as the foliage matures. Fortunately blessed with the same vigorous constitution and well-structured habit of 'Mt Airy' and the ivory white honey scented flowers which appear in feather-like filaments at the ends of the branches in Spring. An outstanding autumn display of rich yellow, red and orange lasts several weeks. Fothergilla 'Blue Shadow' has proven to be a showstopper and provides a sharp color contrast to companion plants, particularly those with golden foliage.
