Wow! The very large 3'', fully double flowers are slate purple to near-black and have 15-20 petals per flower, giving them a very full, fluffy appearance. They are downward facing like most hellebores. Named for famous British Plantswoman Gertrude Jekyll and has more of an upright, standard, tree like habit, sometimes attaining a height of over 3 feet. The foliage also tends to be more glossy than the species. Hellebore foetidus is hardy in every state of the U.S. and are perhaps the hardiest of all Hellebores. In most areas, a couple hours of sun are appreciated and only in the deep South do they require full shade. Very interesting and architectural plant with attractive foliage and tall, large clusters of pale green with a maroon rimmed flowers.
