Although the western maidenhair has traditionally been considered a variant of Adiantum pedatum, the two are more appropriately considered separate species but the differences are subtle. Elegant, graceful and delicate, this beauty . Does not like areas with hot humid summers. Other common names include serpentine maidenhair, Aleutian maidenhair, and five-fingered fern.

The most graceful and delicate of all native ferns, hardy and easy to grow. Lacy, soft green leaves with a dark center on thin, shiny black stems. One of the top ten perennial ferns. Fronds are arranged in a half circle like a fan. Requires a deep, shady location and prefers moist, but not wet, soil. Likes heavy-textured soils and soils rich in humus. Deciduous. Elegant, graceful and delicate. Among my most favorite of ferns, this hardy maidenhair is semi-evergreen and must be trimmed back in early spring to let the new growth through. Another lovely variety of Hart’s Tongue fern. This European selection forms a nice clump of evergreen, horizontal 'tongues'. This one is similar to the species but the fronds have gentle waves, or undulations, along the frond. The interesting wavy foliage makes a very attractive ground cover when planted en masse.
