Bean Bush Blue Lake

Beans

SEEDS - Botanical Interests - An old time favorite with exceptional Blue Lake flavor, it is noted for retaining its excellent flavor and texture when frozen. This snap bean (or green bean) grown on short bushy plants is eaten pod and all and is one of those vegetables that tastes significantly better when grown at home rather than bought at the grocery store. Blue Lake 274 produces a very large crop of round 6” pods all at once. An excellent variety for containers. This packet plants: One 10-foot row. (To view a commonly asked question about growing beans, click here. ). When to plant outside: RECOMMENDED. Sow in spring, after average last frost. If the weather is cold and wet, wait for warmer weather. For all areas, bush beans can be planted in succession to produce beans all season. Seed a new crop every 7 to 14 days up to 60 days before first fall frost. Note for Southwest and South: Even though frost sensitive and preferring warm temperatures, the beans will drop flowers if daytime temperatures are consistently above 85-90 degrees F. In these very hot summer areas, beans should be planted in mid-March for June harvest AND in early August for late September harvest. When to start inside: Not recommended. Special Germination Instructions: It isn’t absolutely necessary, but seeds can be treated with an inoculant containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria. This may help plant growth and production if you are planting beans or peas in an area for the first time. Beans need good air circulation, thus the recommended distance between rows of 3’-4’. Seeds that do not come up can be immediately replaced. BUY NEW SEED EVERY YEAR. Bean seed does not store well and old seed is a big contributor to home garden failure. Bot: Phaseolus vulgaris

Bean Pole Blue Lake Organic

Beans

SEEDS - Botanical Interests - An old favorite – the organic Blue Lake Pole beans have beany sweet flavor. They are fiberless and “meaty”. Outstanding flavor combined with high yields make growing these vigorous 5’ – 6’ vines worth the time. Excellent canned, frozen, or eaten fresh. It is a white seeded variety that is Mosaic virus resistant. See inside packet for instructions on how to build a bean tepee – fun for kids! (To view a commonly asked question about growing beans, click here. ). When to plant outside: RECOMMENDED. Sow in spring, after average last frost. If the weather is cold and wet, wait for warmer weather. Note: In very hot summer areas such as the south and southwest, plant in March for June harvest and in August for late September harvest. SEEDS - Botanical Interests - This heirloom variety, introduced before 1864, has excellent flavor. A heavy producer, it is meaty and tender. Soybean Edamame Green Envy

Beans

SEEDS - Botanical Interests - Envy Edamame is a short season variety, maturing in just 75 days. The 24 well-branched plants produce multitudes of light green pods filled with 2-3 buttery sweet beans. The boiled beans are easily popped out of the pod straight to your mouth! Edamame (pronounced 'ed-uh-mah-may') means beans on a branch. The beans are 40% protein (11 grams in 1/2 cup of cooked beans), high in vitamins A, B, calcium, and iron. They are also very high in fiber and essential fatty acids. Lower cholesterol and reduced risk of heart disease are just a few of the benefits credited to the increased consumption of soy products. Even better than the nutritional perks, they taste incredible! Why snack on potato chips when you can have edamame beans as a healthier tasty treat? The Japanese are fond of serving them as an appetizer with beer. This easy to grow snack is grown a lot like other types of beans. The plants usually do not require staking unless you are in a windy area. When to plant outside: Spring, after average last frost. If weather is still cool and wet, wait until it warms up. When to start inside: Not recommended. Special Sowing & Germination Instructions: Many people suggest soaking the seeds for 3 or 4 hours before planting. It isn't absolutely necessary, but seeds can be treated with an inoculate containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria which will assist it in its nitrogen producing capabilities. For best results--BUY NEW SEED EVERY YEAR. Edamame seed does not store well, and old seed is a big contributor to home garden failure. If you will not be planting your seeds immediately after purchase, store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Bot: Glycine max
